Nail Knowledge: Builder Gel vs. Hard Gel
Do you know the difference? Whether you're a nail newbie or a gel lover, understanding the difference is a must.
What is Builder Gel?
Builder Gel is used to create structure and strength on the natural nail or to create extensions.
But here’s the twist, Builder Gel can be either a soft gel or a hard gel - let’s break that down....
The key differences: Soak off vs. File off
A key difference lies in how they’re removed:
Builder Gel (Soft Gel): Often a lower viscosity, can be soaked off in acetone.
Hard Gel: Thicker consistency, must be filed off - not soakable.
Another difference is the strength. Hard Gel is a much stronger product compared to a soft gel, such as Builder Gel.
Application & Packaging
Soft Gels and Hard Gels differ significantly in how they are applied, worn and removed.
Both our Builder Gels and Hard Gels require a Rubber Base Coat.
Builder Gel - found in bottles or pots, depending on the brand and formula.
Hard Gel - usually found in pots due to the viscosity of the product but again, this depends on the brand and formula.
Infill/Rebalance or remove?
Both Builder Gels and Hard Gels can be infilled/rebalanced. The key difference is that Builder Gel (Soft Gel) can be fully removed with acetone.
Remember when rebalancing:
File off at least 80% of the old product and always check the nail health before reapplying.
Remove any lifting of the product completely before reapplying to avoid bacterial and fungal growth.
When working with Jade UK Builder Gels and Hard Gels, we recommend infilling/rebalancing, rather than full removals to reduce over-filing of the nail plate and over-exposure to acetone.
