Nail Knowledge: Do you know your grit?

One of the most common questions is: “What grit file should I use?”

Or maybe you get confused when you hear “higher” vs. “lower” grit - what does it really mean?

Let’s break it down...

What does the grit mean and why does it matter?

The grit on a nail file refers to the coarseness or fineness of its abrasive surface.

Nail file grit is measured in numbers - lower numbers are coarser, while higher numbers are finer.

For example, a 100-grit file is much coarser than a 180-grit file.

Using the correct grit nail file is essential for protecting nail health, improving efficiency and ensuring client comfort whilst achieving thorough nail preparation and the desired look.

Follow your brands recommendation for nail prep with their gel systems.

Common grit levels and their usage:

80-100 Grit - Very coarse: Best for artificial nails and removing bulk from product. Not safe for natural nails.

150 Grit - Medium: Ideal for refining enhancements and debulking product. Can be used very gently on natural nails for HEMA-FREE systems.

180 Grit - Medium: Best for shaping, shortening natural nails, as well as refining enhancements. Can be used on natural nails.

240 Grit - Fine: Best for smoothing and finishing natural nails before product application.  Can be used on natural nails.

Higher than 240 Grit - Extra Fine: Best for buffing and smoothing to create a polished surface. Can be used on natural nails.
